ABOUT THE SUMMIT

Newsweek Romania is organizing the #2024 Energy Summit on October 7, a key event for Romania’s energy future, where industry experts and high-level officials will discuss the challenges and opportunities offered by the transition to renewable energy and the complementarity of traditional energy sources.

In addition to the topics related to the development of renewable energy and complementary sources, we will also cover the latest energy price regulations and their impact on the market. Special attention will be paid to the recent decision of the Senate Energy and Economic Committees to remove

the obligation to install  electricity storage systems not only for current prosumers, but also for those who wish to become prosumers in the future.

This legislative change will have significant implications for the future development of renewable energy projects and energy storage capacity in Romania.
The debate will explore the impact of this decision on energy security, as well as on the transition to a low-carbon economy in line with the Green Deal objectives.

The discussions will also provide concrete business solutions to reduce energy costs and adapt to ESG standards.

Newsweek Romania has established itself on the business events market, in various fields of activity: retail, investment, energy, defense, financial education, health, IT&C, construction. On these occasions, topical issues are discussed with decision-makers from the public administration and representatives of the private business environment, solutions and products of partners and the latest trends are presented. The last Newsweek Energy Summit event of 2023 exceeded 188,000 views.

    Summit opening speech

    Speaker: Mihai Duță

  • 15:05 – 16:30

PANEL 1 - Main challenges for energy grids as the number of renewable energy projects accelerates

    • How much renewable energy is produced in Romania and how much investment is needed to ensure energy independence?
    • What new investments for renewable energy production are financed by the PNRR?
    • Can energy networks for transmission and distribution cope with the explosion of green projects?
    • Why does the volatility of renewable energy production complicate energy system planning? What solutions are needed to compensate for variations in renewable energy?
    • What is the impact of renewable energy on the energy market and trading?
    • If Member States, including Romania, do not rapidly modernize, consolidate and expand their energy networks, are the 2030 Green Deal targets at risk of not being met?
    • Are the investments sufficient and are they keeping pace with the environmental objectives?
    • Why is more renewable energy not being produced? Currently, Romania has about 3,000 MW of installed capacity in wind farms and about 3,000 MW in photovoltaic parks (including prosumers).
    • Why does Romania have the most expensive energy in Europe?
    • What should we expect once the price cap is lifted in 2025?
    • What solutions does the business environment have to reduce costs and at the same time align with ESG standards?

Speakers: Sebastian Burduja, George Niculescu, Virgil Popescu, Marius Bostan, Dana Dărăban

  • 16.30-16.45

PANEL 2 - Transitional or complementary energy?

    • How do natural gas resources in the Black Sea contribute to Romania's energy security?
    • What are the main natural gas exploitation projects in the Black Sea?
    • What progress has been made in the implementation of these projects and what are the challenges encountered?
    • How do these projects influence the development of Romania's energy and economic infrastructure?
    • How does nuclear energy contribute to reducing carbon emissions and achieving the Net Zero objectives?
    • To what extent can nuclear energy be considered a sustainable solution in the context of the energy transition?
    • What are the current and future projects in the field of nuclear energy?

Speakers: Raluca Covrig, Răzvan Popescu, Radu Constantin, Bogdan Andronic
